The Smoking Tire Bolt Action Pen
We reached out to Matt in 2023 to see about doing a pen together since it felt like a perfect crossover between everyday carry (EDC) and car enthusiasts. Both communities appreciate well-made things and, in fact, our founder Will orginally got into machining to build car parts before he started making pens.
A lot of us here at Tactile are into motorsports. Kevin, our Production Manager, flags and is a first responder at local track days and F1 races, Palmore used to do endurance motorcycle racing, and Felix's Camaro unintentionally caught some air in the parking lot last year.
Point is, the smell of gasoline and burning rubber runs deep within our shop so, after an introductory call with Matt, we first decided to go with DLC titanium Bolt Action pens followed by a gray, anodized aluminum version. Both feature Black DLC or anodized bronze accents and custom clip engravings. Supplies are limited and, like before, The Smoking Tire Patreon supporters get the first crack before going to the general public.
These are our "Standard" length Bolt Action pen and come with a Pilot G2 0.7 mm refill. Many of our customers like to use their own personal favorites, however, and so we put together a list of compatible refills that work with our pens.
Aluminum anodized beautifully, machines quickly with miniumal wear on the tooling, and is durable enough to withstand a lifetime of use. It's also less expensive, hence the lower price than titanium, bronze, or copper.
Commonly known as "DLC," Diamond-like Carbon coating is a nanocomposite layer that turns titanium a beautiful black color and adds hardness and lubricity. DLC is often used in internal engine components due to the low coefficient of friction and amazing wear properties. And like every product we sell, these pens come with a lifetime warranty.

For some of us, over the years we've paid attention to the implements we use for writing, the roller, the color, the flow, the barrel and of course the tip :) It's a joy to run into something you've done for so long and find something completely new, exciting and fun to use. Coming into this purchase I am more of a fountain pen guy. Love a nice flow when I write and hate when a pen scratches. I’m saying this I am impressed with this ball point. Good weight, the machine texture feels great in the hand and the pilot gel flows adequately. The bolt is great to play with and makes for that little bit of satisfaction every time you are done writing. They nailed it with this one. 10/10 would recommend
This pen is one of the best I have ever used. I have always been picky about my pens and only a few have ever written the way I like, but they usually didn’t have the feel and heft I would prefer. While this ink cartridge is different from what I typically prefer, it writes very well with no drying or smudging issues, and the pen feels perfect in my hand. The weight is spot on, and the texture brings everything to the next level. To get all of this and support one of my favorite podcasts/Youtube channels is icing on the cake.
The pen is great, but I didn’t get the special smoking tire clip that I ordered via their Patreon, I just got a blank one. Saw some comments that others had the same issue. So I paid extra for the standard pen, basically.
