It all started with one frustrated guy and an old lathe.
In 2012, Will Hodges rented 160 ft² in the corner of a friend's workshop, bought a WWII-era lathe, and made his first thousand pens by hand. He wasn't trying to build a company. He was frustrated with how disconnected we've become from the things we own and that well-made objects had become a luxury instead of a given.
So, he made the thing he wanted to exist: a pen you can carry every day, use for decades, and hand down when the time comes.
Somewhere along the way, it became a real operation.
What started as a one-man mission didn't stay that way for long. Word got around that someone in Texas was making quality pens built to last and the orders kept coming. One lathe became several and Will started hiring talented machinists and operators who cared about the work as much as he did.
The tools grew more capable and the team grew with them but the standard he set on that first batch never moved. That standard of quality and doing as much as possible in house is the constant thread running through everything we make and what drives our future innovation.

OUR PROCESS
#1 The material
Real metal, all the way through.
Every Tactile Turn pen is machined from raw metal stock in materials like titanium, copper, bronze, and aluminum. There are no castings here and no filler, nothing pretending to be something it isn't, because real metal is what lets a pen ride in a pocket, take a drop, and get used hard every day for decades without ever giving up. We're drawn to metals that don't just endure but improve with age. Like the way titanium shrugs off a lifetime of wear or how copper and bronze settle into a personal patina no two owners will ever share. Carry one long enough and it stops looking new and starts looking like yours.
#2 THE MACHINING
A shop that can make almost anything.
The heart of Tactile Turn is our machine shop and it means business. Fourteen Swiss lathes, most of them late-model Citizens, run day and night in the hands of machinists and operators who think in ten-thousandths of an inch. It's a shop that can make almost anything, and we do. Alongside our own pens, we also produce parts and prototypes for customers in aerospace and defense. We aim most of our capacity at writing instruments because that's where we started but love making new things and pushing the limits.
#3 The FINISHING TOUCH
Adding some extra special.
A pen doesn't come off the lathe finished. It takes shape in the finishing department, where we add our signature machined texture, coated in Cerakote paint, anodized, stonewashed, or lasered with intricate designs. Because we keep almost all of the finishing in house (PVD and aluminum anodizing excluded), we can add levels of customization like individual custom clip engravings to group orders designed from scratch. It's the slowest and most deliberate stretch of the whole process, and the reason two pens cut from the same stock can leave the building with completely different character.
#4 THE FULFILLMENT
Assembled, inspected, and shipped under one roof.
When the machining and finishing are done, everything comes together in the next room over. Assembly, QC, and Customer Service are all work a short walk from the shop, which means the person who answers your email can get up and watch your pen being made. And if something goes wrong, that same short walk is all it takes to make it right. Every pen is inspected by hand and backed by a Lifetime Warranty, the kind honored by a real person instead of the fine print. Honest goods, made by honest folks from raw material to the pen in your pocket. That's pretty much our story.
